It's the launch of Battlestar Galactica tonight in Sydney...

it gets you thinking about various tv shows that have had robots as regular characters in the show - there are a couple of obvious ones...

here's a start...

Battlestar Galactica (The Cylons)
The Jetsons (Rosie)
Lost in Space (Robot)
Metal Mickey (Mickey)
Small Wonder (Vicki)
Doctor Who (heaps... including the daleks and K9)

... got others?

well...

I'm not sure how this happened, but somehow I've managed to get permission to outlay a bunch of cash on a new DVR - the Topfield TF5000PVRt (see it here)

it all started when the VCR packed it in and we decided we should get a replacement (that's about a hundred bucks for a cheapy - and let's face it - who's likely to spend a lot of money on a VCR these days?)

In the process of looking at VCRs, we slowly graduated to a hifi VCR, a VCR/DVD combo, a DVD Writer, a DVD Writer + Hard Drive, and then we discovered the wonderful world of DVRs. The DVR is essentially a set top box with a hard drive included so you don't have to worry about a VCR, you just record it... now that's cool..

So - after looking at these for a few hundred bucks, we realised what the top end Topfield is capable of... and somehow... still not sure how... but I got the ok for the top end model with the twin tuner - freakishly enough, it allows you to record one channel, whilst recording another channel and playing back something you had previously recorded.

Another cool feature with the Toppy is the automatic time shifting - it's always recording up to an hour or so of the current channel you're watching - so even if you're not actually recording the show, you're able to skip back 10 seconds to an hour to rewatch what you might have missed. Fantastic for the cricket/footy - you can control your own slow motion replays!

so far - I'm loving it
